It doesn't seem that White Collar Crime takes a holiday - even if it is Saint Patrick's Day and Holy Week combined. Wonder if that confounds Irishmen around the world? Sorry, I digressed - back to the week in review.

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida: Seven were indicted on a credit-car ...

The target - people drowning in debt, their nose barely above water, needing help. The solution (so they thought) was the Dorean Group. The outcome - a big fat scam. There is no such thing as a free ride.
Kurt F. Johnson, age 45, and Dale Scott Heineman, age 48, were sentenced last week for their roles in creating this national debt elimination scheme. Johnson will spend 25 years in federal prison (that's 55% of his life thus far) - exiting prison after his 65th birthday. Heineman was sentenced to 21 years - likewise, exiting after his 65th birthday.

Seven plus years in federal prison is no fun! Yet, for her fraudulent activities that is exactly what Carol Estep, age 54, of Hurley, Virginia got. “This defendant made one false statement after another, all in the name of greed,” U.S. Attorney John Brownlee said today. “In order to line her own pockets, Ms. Estep stole money from disabled individuals who were truly in need of financial assistance.”
As a white collar crime speaker, I often state that Every choice has a consequence. In the case of Estep her choices have significant consequences not only to herself but others she was associated with. Not only was a fraud committed by Estep - her son, Timothy Carl Ling, age 30, a ...

The other day I received a wonderful e-mail from an unexpected source - Jada Carlsons mother - Faith.
As a reminder and for a little background, many months back there was a story about a young girl in Garland, Texas who (with the help of her month) created a fictious story to win Hannah Montana tickets. When uncovered it took the news media by storm. As a teen ethics speaker through the Choices Foundation, I wrote a blog about the lesson that this young girls mother taught and the consequences that followed.
Soon after ...

So many times today we hear about identity theft and how to take precautions to avoid it. The reality is - every choice has a consequence. GREGORY KOPILOFF, 35, of Seattle, Washington, was sentenced to 51 months in prison and three years of supervised release for Mail Fraud, Accessing a Protected Computer without Authorization to Further Fraud and Aggravated Identity Theft.
KOPILOFF pleaded guilty in November 2007, admitting he used file sharing programs to invade the computers of victims across the United States to get access to their personal information in tax returns, credit reports, bank statements and student financial aid applications. Some things in life are obvious - one such thing is don't bribe elected officials. Apparently Mr. Telles was absent from class in law school the day that was taught. On March 14, 2008 Raymond Telles, age 51, former city representative and unsuccessful mayoral candidate plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, and deprivation of honest services - all of the above is basically - bribery.

Most people might look at the title and assume the Sherriff's Deputy was the one who saved the day. WRONG! He was the one guilty. As I've said before, Child Pornographers come from all walks of life.

To some it is easy to cheat the government. Years ago I taught courses on proper coding of medicare and medicaid billing. The courses were successful, but often, I would get people following the course to tell me an "inside" tip about how to circumvent the system in order to maximize the return - fraudulent coding in effect. My response - You'll go to jail for that.
